Why timing homework helps
Kids "dragging out" homework is universal — 4 hours of work that takes 1 hour real.
Common causes:
- Lack of focus
- Phone temptation
- Distractions
- Procrastination
How it works
Parkinson's Law: "Work expands to fill available time"
- Give 4 hours → uses 4 hours
- Give 1 hour → finishes in 1 hour
Stanford 2024 study: kids using stopwatch had 47% higher focus.
Setup
- Discuss with child: "What homework today?"
- Break by subject (math/reading/science)
- Estimate time together
- Start stopwatch when starting
During
- Parent nearby, not hovering
- No phones / TV — even for parents!
- Water + light snack ready
- Quiet room with good light
After
- Stop stopwatch, log time
- Praise (not money — maybe play time)
- Compare with previous day — faster?
Age-appropriate sessions
Grades 1-3
- 20-30 min per round
- Break 5 min
- 2-3 rounds/evening
Grades 4-6
- 30-45 min per round
- Break 10 min
- 2 rounds/evening
What NOT to do
- ❌ Scold during timing — creates stress
- ❌ Use as punishment
- ❌ Compare to siblings
- ✅ Make it a game: "Let's beat yesterday's time!"
Results in 1 month
- Homework speed up 30-40%
- More play/rest time
- Less family stress
- Kid learns time management
