What is the Pomodoro Technique?
Created by Francesco Cirillo in the late 1980s, the Pomodoro Technique uses 25-minute focused work sessions separated by short breaks. "Pomodoro" means tomato in Italian — Cirillo used a tomato-shaped kitchen timer.
How it works
- Work 25 minutes without distraction
- Break 5 minutes — stretch, drink water
- After 4 rounds → long break 15-30 minutes
Why it works
Your brain has limited focus capacity. Continuous work for 2-3 hours decreases productivity. Pomodoro lets the brain refresh before fatigue hits, sustaining energy all day.
Tips for success
- Choose ONE specific task before starting
- Silence all notifications
- Start the timer immediately
- Stop when it rings — even mid-task
- Note what you accomplished
- Take the full 5-minute break
Pro tip: If you're "in the zone" and don't want to stop — that's a sign this round worked. Finish the Pomodoro before continuing.
